Roman-Style Wall and Gate
myminifactory
This is a replica of a Roman-style wall topped with a wooden roof and featuring stone steps. The design includes a gate, a straight-line tower, and a corner tower with a tile roof option. You can add a firing platform for archers, scorpions, or ballistae above the gate or towers, also with an optional wood roof. Print the files at 100% size if you plan to use them with 1:72 scale figures. If not, simply set the printout to a larger size - this will take longer but result in more accurate dimensions. This wall-and-gate combination is versatile and can be used to display walls across various time periods. The attached pictures show how it works with a set of 1:72 scale Late Roman era Huns and Alans from 400 AD, as well as a Medieval English Archer dating back 1000 years later. At 1:144 scale, larger projects become possible such as frontier walls and towers of indefinite length, or a complete self-enclosed castellum. The main gate file contains two separate hinged gate doors, two smaller doors for the upper level, and an iron grate. You can hang the iron grate through the opening in the floor in a raised position by attaching it to two pegs on the inside wall. I made the door elements slightly chunkier than real doors to allow printing at a smaller 1:144 scale. My guide for the roofing above the wall was that a medieval archer with a longbow should be able to draw his bow when standing under it. Originally, all roofs were detachable, but that was too fussy to print out and assemble. If you prefer the wall or gate platform without a wooden roof, simply print out that file instead. I printed the examples in the pictures using PLA with a 0.6mm nozzle on an Ultimaker 2+. The largest file to print out in this scale is the gate file, which takes around 13 hours. Settings: 5x top and 5x bottom layers, wall line count=3, infill density 10%, normal 0.15mm layer height. Use a raft for the separate door and grate elements - no other supports are needed. If you prefer 1:144 scale, reduce to 50% for a much faster printout. Alternatively, 1:56 heroic scale would require a 128% scale setting and takes longer. Enjoy! Note Aug 18 2019: updates/corrections during first 30 days of posting (1) wall and tower crenellations made larger, tiled roofing version added for walls. Wall versions with smaller crenellations still exist of course and can be made available on request. (2) added corner and straight-line towers, but had to correct the wall connector pins+holes as well as door positions/dimensions later (sorry!). (3) Tower/gate platform size adjusted +5% to fit properly on all towers, ballista base added to the "free view" platform. Note Jan 05 2020: Adjusted the roof support post at one end of the tile roof walls, which was too thick and tended to interfere with the doors in the towers properly closing.
