This Roman marble artwork portrays a satyr and silenus, typical decorations in Roman peristyle gardens. Carved with high-relief masks, it also features a shepherd's crook and cymbals between them. A gift to The Metropolitan Museum of Art, this 1st century A.D. piece is on display in Gallery 162. Similar marble reliefs were found in Pompeii, often used as Dionysiac cult objects or theatrical masks.
