This marble head of a Greek philosopher likely portrays Socrates (470/469 – 399 BC). Socrates was a classical Greek thinker renowned for founding Western philosophy. He remains an elusive figure, mostly known through accounts from ancient writers, particularly the works of his students Plato and Xenophon, as well as the plays by his contemporary Aristophanes. Plato's dialogues offer some of the most extensive descriptions of Socrates to have survived from antiquity, yet it is unclear how much of Socrates' true nature is obscured behind Plato's influential writings.
