Roman Lady

Roman Lady

cults3d

Portrait of a Roman lady. This small head from Iponuba, of provincial size, is an example of the assimilation of Roman fashions by the local Betic elites at the beginning of the first century. The hairstyle follows the pattern of the smooth type that distinguishes Antonia the Younger (36 BC - 37). The hair, wavy, starts from a central parting and is combed evenly over the skull. The coarseness of the carving indicates that it is a local work, probably made by a craftsman in Iponuba itself. Iponoba is the name of an Iberian-Roman city of the Baetica settled in the current hill of Minguillar, in the municipality of Baena.
