Roman Heating : hypocaust
sketchfab
Stylized architectural sections reveal ancient secrets of a Roman hypocaust, a pioneering central heating system. A hypocaust was a revolutionary central heating solution for both ground and pools that Romans utilized. Fuel from an adjacent room warmed the air in a spacious void beneath the earth and pool. Warmth spread beneath the ground, where it was stored before being released through small terracotta mounds. These mounds also served as supports for the suspensura. The ground and pool were situated above a stable level called "suspensura," which consisted of an impermeable hydraulic mortar. Heat was also diffused through walls, thanks to a network of terracotta pipes known as "tubuli."
