The original Roman inscription in marble now stands proudly in front of the Municipal Council of Montemor-o-Novo's building, but its roots are firmly planted in Mértola. In the seventeenth century, the chief guardian of Montemor-o-Novo took it upon himself to gather all the inscriptions from his lands in that area and display them prominently on the facade of the Santa Maria do Bispo Church within the castle walls of Montemor-o-Novo. As the church crumbled into ruin, the inscription was relocated to its current position for safekeeping.
