The Aqueducts of the Roman empire brought water from far-off sources to cities, supplying private homes, Spas, Fountains and Latrines with the precious liquid. Meanwhile, wastewater was channeled through sewage systems and dumped into nearby waters. Water flowed smoothly through the Aqueducts, driven solely by gravity, thanks to a gentle slope in the ducts made of stone, bricks or cement; most conduits were hidden underground while valleys and plains were bridged with impressive architectural feats featuring tiered arches. Often, these projects included sedimentation tanks, sluice gates and distribution tanks to control water flow. The Imperial Rome of the III Century boasted eleven Aqueducts that supported over a million consumers; Roman aqueducts are scattered throughout the Empire, serving as a testament to Roman Civilization's enduring legacy worldwide.
