Along Italy's ancient Appian way in Terracina, impressive Roman columbarium remains stand out. A columbarium is a public space where cinerary urns are stored with respect, often holding the cremated remains of deceased individuals. The word comes from Latin "columba," dove, and was initially used to describe dovecotes – compartmentalized housing for pigeons and doves.
