The iconic Roman Coliseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an elliptical amphitheater situated in Rome, Italy. It's the largest ever constructed within the Roman Empire, exhibiting remarkable feats of Roman architecture and engineering. Built between 70-72 AD under Emperor Vespasian and completed by Titus in 80 AD with alterations during Domitian's reign (81-96), this amphitheater could accommodate 50,000 spectators. Named Amphitheatrum Flavium after the Flavian family name, it hosted gladiatorial games and other public spectacles like mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of historical events, and dramas based on classical mythology. However, its use for entertainment ceased during the early medieval era, later serving as housing, workshops, religious quarters, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.
