The Roman Coliseum, initially referred to as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an elliptical structure located in Rome, Italy. It represents the largest amphitheater ever built within the Roman Empire and stands as one of the most remarkable achievements in Roman architecture and engineering. The construction began between 70-72 AD under Emperor Vespasian and was completed by his son Titus in 80 AD, with further modifications made during Domitian's reign (81-96). Named Amphitheatrum Flavium after the ruling family, the Colosseum could accommodate up to 50,000 spectators. It was primarily used for gladiatorial contests and other public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. However, with time, its purpose evolved to include housing, workshops, religious quarters, fortresses, a quarry, and a Christian shrine before finally ceasing to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era.
