Lot Description: A Julio-Claudian Cinerary Urn crafted in Roman Marble honors Caesennia Grapte, with a unique 18th Century Lid attached. The urn boasts an intricately carved splayed foot and a deep ovoid body, paired with cylindrical handles sculpted in low relief that feature inverted palmettes. Scrolling branches of grapevine and ivy are beautifully rendered on the body's surface, emerging from beneath each handle as if sprouting from the earth itself. On the rectangular panel in front, an elegant Latin inscription reads D(iis) M(anibus) / Caesenniae / Graptes matris ("To the Spirits of the Departed of Caesennia Grapte, her mother"), a poignant tribute to the deceased. Though its finial has been lost to time, the restored lid still proudly sits atop this exquisite relic from the 1st Century A.D.
