Human: Culture: Roman Material: Bronze Dims: H 25.1 Accession No: HCM 156 Current Location: The Hunt Museum Limerick This distinctive jug boasts an oval body that seamlessly transitions into a short, flaring neck with an elegantly curved rim. Its delicate narrow base and curving handle feature a central rib, while the body and neck are crafted as a single cohesive piece. The handle terminates in a volute, beneath which lies a triangle adorned with the bust of a man sporting a beard and tunic secured by a brooch. Two spirals on either side of his head curve downward, ending below in two additional spirals that rest above a palmette. The top of the handle concludes with a thumb-sized scallop shell support, flanked on either side by stylized bird's heads featuring long beaks emerging from volutes. Beneath this lies a series of concentric circles. Jugs of this type were produced in southern Italy between the mid-first and third centuries AD.
