The Romans picked up horse racing when charioteers loaded up their vehicles with arms to win before jumping on their horse-drawn carts, wearing helmets and armor to shield themselves and avoid death in the middle of the Etruscan competition, which had been passed down from the Greeks. Nonetheless, the Romans were also directly influenced by the Greeks, particularly after conquering Greek territory in 146 B.C. According to Roman lore, Rómulo hosted a horse race right after founding Rome, in 753 B.C., as a tactic to divert the Sabines' attention. Thus, while the Sabines celebrated the spectacle, Rómulo and his men snatched their women. This incident is commonly referred to as the "Rapture of the Sabines."
