Roman Barracks
myminifactory
Here are some modular barracks in 1:144 scale, designed to house whatever roman legions you might have close by. Each unit contains sleeping space (double decker beds) for a squad of eight legionaries, plus storage space with access ladder under the roof, as well as a equipment room. They are loosely based on what I saw at the site of a rather large roman barracks town close to where I live. The motive for this post is the castellum (small fort) that can be created out of the elements in my previous roman wall post. The picture there shows how it was made up of four corner towers, two straight line towers and two gates, all separated by two wall units each, and scaled to 50% size (1:144 scale instead of original 1:72). This looked fine from outside but it was still very unsatisfyingly empty inside. The barracks elements are designed so that a row of four elements (left+2xmiddle+right) on each side of the path between the two gates can now comfortably fill up such a small fort. For number crunchers, this would make 2x4x8 beds = 72 legionaries, which is not quite a century. To get to a full century of 80 legionaries, maybe we can assume an additional bed under the roof ? Also assume that the 20 auxiliary staff will still have to sleep outside the fort..... Am also now posting 1:288 scale paperweight of such a mini-fort :)
