ASKLEPIOS was a powerful deity who oversaw the healing arts. He was also the patron saint and ancestral figure of the Asklepiades, an esteemed order of medical practitioners. Asklepios was born to Apollon, the renowned god of prophecy, and Koronis, a noblewoman from Tricca in ancient Greece. Tragically, his mother perished during childbirth, but Apollon intervened by surgically extracting the unborn child from her womb. This dramatic event earned Asklepios his name, which translates to "one who is cut open." The centaur Chiron took on a mentorship role, instructing Asklepios in the art of medicine. Under Chiron's guidance, Asklepios developed exceptional skills, ultimately becoming capable of reviving the dead. However, this remarkable ability was deemed an affront to the natural order, prompting Zeus to unleash a devastating thunderbolt that brought about his demise. In the aftermath of his passing, Asklepios was immortalized among the stars as Ophiochus, also known as "the Serpent Holder." Some accounts suggest that Koronis was similarly elevated to the heavens as Corvus, a majestic crow. This apotheosis coincided with Asklepios' transformation into a god. He was occasionally conflated with Paeon, Homer's divine physician. Asklepios is often depicted as a benevolent figure, distinguished by his beard and a staff entwined with serpents. Although he may not have been frequently featured in ancient Greek pottery, statues of the deity are plentiful and highly revered.
