Architects create a structure that spans a space while supporting weight by crafting arches (e.g. doorways in stone walls). Arches emerged as early as the second millennium BC in Mesopotamian brick architecture and their systematic use began with the Ancient Romans who were pioneers in applying the technique to a wide range of structures. The ancient Romans learned the arch from the Etruscans, refined it, and tapped its full potential for above ground buildings.
