Rolex SA (/ˈroʊlɛks/) is a top Swiss luxury watchmaker with its main headquarters situated in Geneva, Switzerland.[3] Initially launched as Wilsdorf and Davis by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London, England back in 1905, the company registered Rolex as its brand name for watches in 1908 and was renamed Rolex Watch Co. Ltd. in 1915.[4][5][6][7] After World War I ended, the company moved its operational base to Geneva, Switzerland, seeking to avoid high taxation rates from post-war Britain recovering from war devastation. By 1920, Hans Wilsdorf registered Montres Rolex SA in Geneva as the new company name that eventually evolved into Rolex SA years later.[3][5][8][9] The Hans Wilsdorf Foundation has owned the company since 1960 - a private family trust taking control.[6][10][11] Rolex SA, along with its subsidiary Montres Tudor SA, creates, manufactures, distributes and offers servicing for wristwatches sold under both the Rolex and Tudor brand names. As of 2018, Forbes listed Rolex as the 71st most valuable global brand.[1] Currently in June 2019, three of the world's top ten highest auctioned watches were Rolex timepieces.
