Rocking Smartphone Stand
thingiverse
The "Rocking Smartphone Stand" is a compact, easy-to-print model that uses minimal filament. Using the stand is straightforward - simply slide your smartphone into the slot and let it rock backward until it reaches its balance point. Tap it gently, and it will rock back and forth, creating a fun, minimalist design that everyone enjoys. It's definitely worth printing one for yourself or as a thoughtful gift. Please note that different phone models have varying centers of mass and points of balance, so while this stand should work for most smartphones, it may not be suitable for every make and model. The design is optimized for use with common 4.5" to 5" screen models, excluding larger phones (phablets). It was originally designed for a Samsung Galaxy S5, which works perfectly well, and has also been tested on several iPhone models without issues. However, please be aware that even phone cases can affect the balance point. If your smartphone doesn't rock when you first slide it in, you can easily adjust the curve of the stand to suit your phone's center of mass. This is a simple process that can be done with PLA prints. Different smartphone models have varying depths (thickness), and phone cases add to this depth. To ensure a snug fit, a range of STL files has been provided, covering phones from 8mm to 13mm thick in 1mm increments. Although the stand should work fine at the designed angles for most smartphones, if your phone wants to fall forward when you slide it in, you need to adjust its center of mass and balancing point. Adjusting this is easy and can be done quickly by following these simple steps: (1) Fill a bowl with near-boiling water (2) Drop the stand in for a few seconds, then carefully remove it - it will be hot and very flexible, so handle it gently to avoid distorting its shape (3) Gently bend the stand to make the necessary adjustments (4) Let it cool in the adjusted shape; you can run it under cold water to speed up the process. It will return to its original hardened state. (5) Test your smartphone and see how the rocking action has changed (6) It may take a few attempts to get it balancing and rocking well. If you have distorted the stand during the adjustment process, print another one and match the adjustment made in one go, so you end up with a nice-looking smartphone stand that rocks. This shouldn't be necessary in most cases, but if it is, making the necessary adjustments is not difficult at all - just give it a try, as the result is well worth the time and effort. Charging: If you want to plug your phone into charge while it's on the stand, simply slide it in upside down with the charging cable attached out the top. It won't rock as usual, since it's effectively tethered, but it will still work as a stand. Please refer to the print settings and images for additional information and instructions.
