I've been crafting action figures lately (see http://tekeian.posterous.com/pages/action-figures). I've produced 80 action figures of diverse designs. One of my objectives is a swift completion and assembly time. All that's required is a flat file and an X-Acto knife for raft trimming, then you can glue it together. The limbs can be articulated by attaching some filament to each limb and passing them through the hole in the torso. The hands (or claws) are capable of holding objects with a ~3mm edge.
