My goal was to create a budget-friendly system for rapid tool changes on the production line. The robot's wrist motion locks into place both the master and tool sides, while compression springs secure the entire assembly tightly. Pneumatic action is used solely to release the piston onto the tool plate (single-action), freeing the mechanism from reliance on pneumatic or electrical signals to hold the tool in place. This design boasts a low cost due to its simplicity compared to ball/cam locking mechanisms featuring double-acting pistons. The system was specifically designed for use with the Kawasaki Robot ZX200S, which can handle up to 200 kg payloads, but it can be easily adapted for other models as well.
