The Robonaut 2 (R2) is a humanoid robot designed to assist astronauts on space missions by performing tasks that require fine motor skills and dexterity. It was developed jointly by NASA's Johnson Space Center and General Motors, with the primary goal of creating a robotic system capable of assisting humans in extravehicular activities (EVAs). The R2 has been tested in various environments, including simulated spacewalks, to evaluate its performance and capabilities. The Robonaut 2 stands at approximately six feet tall and weighs around 300 pounds. It features two arms with seven joints each, allowing it to grasp and manipulate tools and objects with precision. The robot's torso is designed to be flexible, enabling it to move freely in tight spaces. A high-resolution camera system provides R2 with a clear view of its surroundings. The Robonaut 2 was first launched into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-133) on February 24, 2011. It has since been used in various robotic operations, including assisting astronauts during EVAs and performing maintenance tasks within the International Space Station.
