The Birth of Animation Begins Humans have been mesmerized by moving images since ancient civilizations discovered ways to manipulate light and shadow. The earliest known forms of animation date back thousands of years, with evidence of primitive stop-motion techniques used in cave paintings and pottery. In the 19th century, inventors began experimenting with photography and motion. Eadweard Muybridge's iconic series of photographs capturing a galloping horse in 1878 laid the groundwork for modern animation. His work showcased the potential of sequential images to create the illusion of movement. French caricaturist Émile Cohl is credited with creating the first fully animated film, "Fantasmagorie," in 1908. This groundbreaking short used hand-drawn images and basic narrative techniques to tell a story.
