
Robo Rob

Design: This character was created as a companion for my kids' story, where he's found dormant on another world by young adventurous alien kids and helps them along their journey. I've included some sketches of my original ideas, as well as other characters I'd love to model in the future. Initially, he had legs but I changed it to a hover base, thinking it would be better for a VR avatar due to movement mechanics in VR. The arms move and are optimized for FDM printing, with adjustments needed for SLA printing due to finer tolerances requiring resized ball joints. An extra hand is included in a more closed position that can be interchanged. PRINTING: This design is optimized for FDM printing, minimizing the amount of support needed by breaking it up. However, I still recommend printing with supports. I've tried orientating all the pieces in Meshmixer but double-check if you have a lay-flat option in your slicer as some parts didn't quite look flat to build on. My build plate sticks well, but some users may need to add a brim for smaller arm parts. I printed mine at 0.2 layer height and it came out really well. ASSEMBLY: Some assembly is required: The base of the body and hover sections have three holes where the nubs fit in and push together tightly; I didn't need glue as it was a nice tight fit. The shoulder ball and first section of the arm also have a hole for smaller nubs, which you may want to glue due to potential movement. Then, the elbow sections just gently pop together, with a small groove in the forearm section for the ball to slot through. The hands slide on the forearm and are quite tight, requiring no glue; they can also be interchanged. The head has a hole for the largest nub connecting it to the neck, allowing you to pose his head if left unglued.
