Robert Kerr wreck - wheel boss and steering
sketchfab
The historic barque Robert Kerr was built in 1866 and stood at an impressive 190 feet tall before being repurposed as a coal barge. In 1911, the vessel met its demise while being towed from Nanaimo when it wrecked off the coast of Thetis Island. A testament to her sailing ship past, many original features are still visible today, submerged between 5 and 15 meters beneath the surface in British Columbia's chilly waters. On display is a portion of Kerr's steering mechanism, specifically a wheel boss that showcases intricate craftsmanship. It appears to be part of a worm-gear system or similar setup, highlighting the complex engineering involved in sailing ships of this era.
