Built in 1866, the massive 190 foot barque Robert Kerr underwent a transformation into a coal barge before meeting its demise north of Thetis Island in 1911 while being towed from Nanaimo. Many remnants of 19th century sailing ship design can still be seen at this wreck site, located between 5 and 15 meters depth in the icy waters of British Columbia. This sturdy capstan lies buried in the sand just below the stern of the wreck. You may recognize its distinctive features, which are also featured on the back cover of David Leigh Stone's "The Wreck Diver's Guide to Sailing Ship Artifacts of the 19th Century". The images were captured from 49 photographs taken by Ewan Anderson in June 2017.
