Robert Herdman

Originally meant for the ministry, Robert Herdman (1829-1888) left his theological studies to learn painting under the guidance of Robert Scott Lauder. Like many Scottish artists of that era, he selected subjects from Scotland's rich history and literature. In his later years, he became a close friend of Professor John Stuart Blackie, a renowned professor of Greek at Edinburgh University who played a key role in the Celtic Revival movement. Some of Herdman's later creations reflect those passions.
