Coming from Kuenringerstraße in Zwettl, 168 partly covered stairs lead up to Statzenberg where the district commission resides. Near the building stands a monument honoring poet Robert Hamerling, crafted by Hans Brandstetter in 1915. Robert Hamerling was born in Kirchberg am Walde in 1830 and excelled as a poet and writer. From 1840, he attended the high school of Cistercian Abbey Zwettl before moving to Schottengymnasium in Vienna for further education. As one of the most widely read German authors of his time, Hamerling's works left an indelible mark. Ahasver in Rom and Der König von Sion are among his notable writings. On July 13, 1889, Hamerling passed away at the age of sixty, marking a significant loss for literary circles. In recognition of his 150th birthday, Austrian post issued a commemorative stamp in 1980, while streets in Vienna and Berlin were named after him to honor his legacy.
