Problem Statement: Due to the novel Corona Virus, which causes COVID-19, a massive number of patients suffer from respiratory problems, leading to a high demand for intubation and subsequently requiring numerous respiratory devices worldwide. A mechanical ventilator is designed to force air into a patient through a tube inserted into the trachea, featuring an inflatable cuff that creates a seal below the vocal cords (source: https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/tracheostomy/living/speech.html). ROAERA is intended to be a low-resource 3D printable device capable of substituting professional medical ventilators for mild pneumonia cases. The ROAERA concept employs a novel compact principle, utilizing a pulley as the primary feature for angular displacement motion. The tube is positioned between two parts forming a claw-based design that can grasp and compress the tube using a motor. The stepper motor, microcontroller, and power source are placed on top. When activated, the motor pulley rotates, wrapping the cable around the pulley, creating a pulling motion that results in an angular motion within the system, which compresses the air tube. For negative pressure, the stepper motor releases the cable, unwrapping it, causing the upper part to return to its initial position. The controller allows for adjustable cycles tailored to each patient's needs. This model was created as a concept, aiming to attract further attention and optimization to make it manufacturable. Improved placement and calculation of displacements are necessary, including center of masses and balancing torques. An alternative option is to place the motor at the bottom, directly connected to the upper part, reducing the number of components in the assembly. I hope this project receives interest from engineers and investors, allowing us to further develop it.
