RK17 A00089 is a knife handle unearthed during the archaeological excavation of the Rooswijk in 2017. The Rooswijk, a 300-year-old Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship that sank on the treacherous Goodwin Sands in January 1740 off the coast of England, was thoroughly excavated by an international team of maritime archaeologists over two years, spanning from 2017 to 2018. As soon as each excavation campaign concluded, post-excavation work began, focusing on ex-situ research and the analysis of artefacts recovered from the wreck site, while also prioritizing their conservation until the project's completion. The #Rooswijk1740 project is generously funded and spearheaded by the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands (Ministry of Education, Science and Culture), in close collaboration with Historic England and UK-contractor MSDS Marine.
