Risto Krle, a renowned Macedonian playwright, was born on September 3, 1900, in Struga, a town that would later become part of the Republic of Macedonia under Ottoman Empire rule. The son of a skilled shoe maker, Krle's early life was marked by frequent interruptions to his education. However, as a teenager, he enlisted in the army, serving until he succeeded his father in the family profession and became a respected shoe maker in his own right. Throughout World War II, Krle penned many plays that are set against the backdrop of significant historical events, including the First and Second Balkan Wars.
