My oldest son just adores horses, as many boys do, and begged me to build one for him... so I did. When scaling the size should be referenced by the length of a foot. This project was accomplished on a desktop cnc-machine by Stepcraft from 6 mm birch plywood using a spiral-toothed 1.5 mm flute. After machining it required a little sanding and simple gluing together. The screws are for easy alignment only. Next time I will keep the outer parts clean. A laser cutter might be an excellent alternative tool to create (even) larger versions. Probably you could make a copper or bronze version and screw the parts together to get tiny key fob.
