Risen Christ

The Risen Christ, also known as Cristo della Minerva or Christ Carrying the Cross, is a magnificent marble sculpture crafted by Michelangelo and proudly displayed within the Santa Maria sopra Minerva church in Rome. Commissioned in June 1514 with a four-year completion deadline, this masterpiece has undergone significant changes over time. Notable adjustments include the addition of stigmata to Jesus' hands and feet, as well as the later inclusion of a bronze loincloth to conceal his genitalia. This particular scan comes from an earlier version of the work, pre-dating the loincloth's incorporation, and was showcased alongside its updated counterpart in The National Gallery's 2017 "Michelangelo and Sebastiano" exhibition.
