The main events usually take place in February or early March during Shrovetide (or Pre-Lent). Carnival involves public celebrations like parades, street parties, and other entertainment that combines elements of a circus. People wear elaborate costumes and masks to forget their everyday selves and feel more connected as a community. Participants often eat too much food, drink alcohol, and indulge in other treats that they'll give up during Lent. Traditionally, people didn't overconsume animal products like butter and milk; instead, they ate them all up so nothing went to waste. People made pancakes and desserts one last time before Lent began. During Carnival, you might see mock battles, social satire, mockery of authorities, and costumes that exaggerate body parts or animal features. You might hear people using bad language and doing degrading acts, or seeing depictions of disease and death as a joke. Everyday rules are often turned upside down during this time. The term Carnival is used in areas with many Catholics and Greeks. In historically Lutheran countries, the celebration is called Fastelavn. In Evangelical Anglican, Methodist, and other Protestant communities, pre-Lenten celebrations happen on Shrove Tuesday or Mardi Gras. In Slavic Eastern Orthodox nations, Maslenitsa is celebrated before Great Lent. In Germany and the Netherlands, the Carnival season starts on 11/11 at 11:11 am.
