Diamond is a solid form of carbon that boasts its atoms arranged in a crystal structure called diamond cubic. At room temperature and pressure, another solid form of carbon known as graphite stands as the chemically stable form; however, diamond nearly never converts to it. As one of nature's hardest and thermally conductive materials, diamond sees major use in industries like tool-making and polishing tools. The reason for this lies within its unmatched hardness and thermal conductivity, features utilized extensively by scientists studying pressure beneath Earth's surface using diamond anvil cells. Due to the rigid atomic arrangement found within diamond, just a handful of impurities can enter its crystal structure - two notable exceptions include boron and nitrogen. When these defects occur, diamond exhibits brilliant hues ranging from blue (boron) and yellow (nitrogen) to brown (defects), green (radiation exposure), and various shades between pink, purple, orange, and red. Additionally, the material boasts relatively high optical dispersion abilities. Diamonds often form deep within Earth's mantle - 150 to 250 kilometres below its surface. However, their origins can reach as far as 800 kilometres beneath ground level in rare cases. Diamonds come into existence under intense heat and pressure where carbon-containing fluids replace surrounding minerals, and volcanic eruptions subsequently transport these precious gems up through the atmosphere to deposit them within igneous rocks known as kimberlites and lamproites. Synthetic diamonds are manufactured using high-pressure conditions applied upon pure carbon or via chemical vapor deposition methods on hydrocarbon gases. Similarly, cubic zirconia and silicon carbide are crafted into artificial diamond substitutes - these imitations frequently pose difficulties for distinguishing them from authentic natural gems through conventional techniques like light-based assessments and thermal testing procedures.
