The Freedom Monument, or Brivibas piemineklis in Latvian, stands proudly in Riga, Latvia, as a tribute to soldiers who gave their lives during the Latvian War of Independence (1918-1920). This striking monument serves as an essential symbol of freedom, independence, and sovereignty for the people of Latvia. Built in 1935, this towering structure reaches an impressive height of 42 meters (138 feet) made from granite, travertine, and copper. Often at the center of attention, it brings together crowds during public gatherings and official ceremonies in Riga. Twelve striking groups of sculptures and bas-reliefs depict the essence of Latvian culture and history, adding depth to this monument's story. The central core is constructed from descending tetragonal shapes, with a tall 19-meter (62-foot) travertine column topped by the gleaming figure of Liberty lifting three radiant gilded stars. The initial concept for this monumental work was born in the early 1920s when Latvia's Prime Minister Zigfrids Anna Meierovics requested rules be drawn up for an architectural design contest focused on a memorial column. After several competitions, the scheme "Shine like a star!" proposed by Latvian sculptor Karlis Zale became the chosen design. Construction of the monument was successfully completed through private donations at the beginning of the 1930s, leaving behind a testament to the power of unity and vision for generations to come.
