Richard Schöne (1840-1922), a renowned archaeologist and classical philologist from Germany, rose to prominence in 1872 when he was appointed commissioner for the arts at the Prussian Cultural Ministry. Two years later, in 1878, he crafted a statute for museums that would shape the industry's future. Schöne's impressive career continued as director general of the Royal Museums from 1880 until 1905. Meanwhile, Adolf von Hildebrand (1847-1921), a celebrated German sculptor, earned recognition for his five monumental urban fountains and his mastery of traditional techniques that defined him as a master of the old school.
