Alfred Jacquemart, a renowned French sculptor and animalier, was born on February 24, 1824, in Paris, where he also passed away on January 4, 1896. He is often simply known as Alfred Jacquemart. Jacquemart's works are typically signed: A. Jacquemart. Jacquemart studied under the tutelage of painter Paul Delaroche and sculptor Jean Baptiste Jules Klagmann. In 1845, he enrolled in the École des Beaux-Arts. Jacquemart exhibited his creations at the Paris Salon from 1847 to 1879, earning medals in 1857, 1863, and 1865. Jacquemart traveled extensively throughout Egypt and Turkey. He was commissioned by the city of Alexandria, Egypt, to craft a colossal statue of Muhammad Ali of Egypt. Jacquemart worked on various scales, creating large, medium, and small masterpieces. Many of his works were cast in bronze by the Val d' Osne foundry, while some were crafted by the silversmith Christofle. Jacquemart's reputation was ultimately established due to his numerous larger animal creations. In 1870, he was awarded the title of Chevalier of the Légion d'honneur.
