It happens that the lower cable to the extruder snaps in two. What I did next was order a replacement cable directly from the manufacturer, and then I made up my mind not to install it in the same spot again. First, I removed the old cable, which proved to be a bit fiddly but no major issue. I drilled a hole at the bottom right back of the cable with about 15mm-20mm diameter and laid the new cable into a nice big loop. The cable is held firmly in place by my clip.
