I've now refined, perfected, and solidified the design so it works perfectly now. The one in the picture is crafted from 2mm acrylic sheet material (harvested from the scrap pile). The door at the bottom is built from 5mm acrylic sheet for added strength; I found that 2mm worked, but appeared too fragile for a rambunctious 3-year-old's handling. The crazing issue was caused by cutting through the material when it was too cold and thereby experiencing stress with laser heat exposure. If you experience this problem as well, just pop the pieces into the oven at 100-110C for 50 minutes, then let them cool slowly; this eases out any tension and stops it cracking when applying solvent cement to assemble it. I'll be posting a higher-quality model soon once I've put it through rigorous testing under real-world conditions with an overexcited 3-year-old user. The link to the demonstration is: https://youtu.be/g9Ga7IZQuYw Please bear in mind my subpar video recording skills; main: This is a current project I'm undertaking for a friend's young child who seeks better behavioral conduct, yet desires an engaging system rather than a mere sticker chart. The structure possesses an A4 footprint so it should fit most laser cutters. Initially, the coin slot is mounted on the wall where each deserving child inserts a coin upon receiving a reward. Upon placing it in the slot, the child observes as their prize tumbles downwards through a series of ramps. Towards the end of each day or preferably early the next morning, the child gets to calculate their daily score before prising open the bottom door and liberating all collected coins back into a receptacle – ideally an envelope or container! This novel design aims to outperform traditional sticker charts as it grants instant rewards while also allowing later slots even if a youngster isn't nearby. Watching the coin fall and rebound generates a tangible delight which, when coupled with their accumulation of rewards serves as strong positive reinforcement in the development phase. Kids will appreciate that each collected reward builds their wealth as does the gradual savings concept that reinforces personal discipline (can they buy tickets for the park today or put it off until the end to get the perfect toy).
