In lathe machining of long bars, two centres are utilized for support; one being called a live centre and the other a fixed dead centre in the tail-stock. The live centre is part of the main spindle and rotates alongside the supported workpiece, while the dead centre experiences wear due to relative motion with the work piece. To mitigate this issue, a live or anti-friction bearing centre replaces the dead centre, revolving with the work like a live centre.
