Revolver cylinder pen holder
thingiverse
Pen holder resembling a revolver handgun cylinder. I designed this in Fusion360 for CNC machining, but it can also be 3D printed. I've included STP, STL, and SketchUp files. The model is 2.6 inches tall and 2.75 inches in diameter. The pen holes are 5/8 inch (0.625) in diameter, which is rather wide to accommodate fat turned-wood pens. To use the Fusion toolpaths, start with a 2.75-inch round stock. You'll need 1.75 inches of tool stickout for the outside grooves, which have a draft-angle to make them machinable with normal tools and flute lengths of ~0.75 inch. Since I used a router instead of a knee mill, the chamber holes are only shallowly machined and should be finished on a drill press with a 5/8-inch (0.625) drill bit. Please check your router's Z travel to ensure it has enough clearance. If you start with round stock like me, the outside diameter of the part won't be machined and will have a "mill finish" look, which isn't very pretty. I plan to get mine sandblasted for a matte finish then anodize it. The finished part weighs just over 1 pound in 6061 aluminum. Tools used: Lakeshore Carbide 1/4-inch 3-flute TAS rougher http://www.lakeshorecarbide.com/tas14thealuminumshreddervariableflutecarbideroughingendmill.aspx Lakeshore Carbide 1/4-inch 3-flute ZrN coated end mill http://www.lakeshorecarbide.com/14variablefluteendmillforaluminumzrn.aspx Lakeshore Carbide 3/8-inch 2-flute ball end mill, uncoated You could use a 1/4-inch ball, but you still need 1.75 inches of stickout http://www.lakeshorecarbide.com/38carbideballendmill2flute.aspx Lakeshore Carbide 1/4-inch 90-degree chamfer tool http://www.lakeshorecarbide.com/1490degreeincludedanglechamfertool.aspx 1/8-inch Spot drill (for marking the centers of the holes to aid the drill press ops) I used a standard 1/8-inch drill bit.
