A historic firearm allegedly connected to an event that took place during the American Civil War is on display at the museum, having been donated by Barney Sweeney. This artifact was showcased in February 1922, when the IRA seized control of Ballymacool House and Rockhill House. The Irish Civil War began on June 28th, 1922, following the signing of the Treaty that effectively concluded the War of Independence and led to the establishment of the Irish Free State. On June 29th at 5am, two groups of Pro-Treaty forces departed Letterkenny with the intention of attacking the Anti-Treaty IRA stronghold at Ballymacool House. A fierce gun battle ensued before the IRA eventually surrendered, allowing several members to escape capture. Photogrammetry was carried out by Jurand Macioszczyk, and this project was made possible thanks to a generous benefactor.
