Reused recessed shaft fragment E17
sketchfab
A fragment of a Caen stone recessed shaft is reused in the north elevation of Rochester Cathedral's north nave aisle wall. This piece may have been part of the original c.1080 north nave aisle window recesses that were recased in Caen stone after a devastating fire swept through the cathedral in 1137. The Romanesque windows that once adorned this area were eventually covered up when new Gothic windows were installed. In 1670, nearly forty feet (12.2 meters) of the north nave aisle wall was rebuilt by workmen led by Palmer.
