Reused recessed shaft fragment E14
sketchfab
The Caen stone shaft is a fragment from a recessed area that has been repurposed into the north elevation of Rochester Cathedral's north nave aisle wall. It might have originally belonged to the c.1080 north nave aisle window recesses which would have been re-clad in Caen stone following a fire in 1137. These Romanesque windows were eventually erased when the current Gothic windows were installed. A significant portion, forty feet long (12.2m), of the north nave aisle wall was rebuilt in 1670 according to Palmer's 1897 account on page 27.
