The Caen stone base from a recessed shaft is repurposed in Rochester Cathedral's north elevation on the north nave aisle wall. It could have been part of the original c.1080 north nave aisle window recesses that were re-faced with Caen stone after a fire in 1137 destroyed the Romanesque windows. These early windows were erased when the current Gothic windows were installed. In 1670, forty feet (12.2m) of the north nave aisle wall was rebuilt (Palmer 1897, p. 27).
