Retvizan, a pre-dreadnought battleship, was commissioned by the Imperial Russian Navy before the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. Constructed at William Cramp & Sons in America, Retvizan was named after a Swedish ship of the line captured during the Battle of Vyborg Bay in 1790. The name Rättvisan translates to fairness and justice. Initially assigned to the Baltic Fleet, Retvizan was redeployed to the Far East in 1902. During the Japanese surprise attack on Port Arthur on February 8-9, 1904, Retvizan was torpedoed while attempting to take refuge inside the harbour entrance due to her significantly increased draft from water taken aboard after being hit. She was later refloated and repaired. Retvizan joined the 1st Pacific Squadron's attempt to reach Vladivostok through the Japanese blockade on August 10, but were forced to return to Port Arthur after their squadron commander was killed and his flagship damaged in the Battle of the Yellow Sea. Retvizan was eventually sunk by Japanese howitzers in December following the Japanese control of the harbour heights.
