A 2015 update for this project can be found here, and in late December 2015, the author stumbled upon a fantastic mod that involved placing an SNES into a pelican case. Inspired by this, he set out to create a portable gaming rig using a Raspberry Pi, a task that took seven months to complete due to the challenges encountered along the way. The project would not have been possible without the hard work of those behind Retro Pie and Emulation Station. Lifehacker provides an excellent walkthrough for creating a similar setup. The author's creation is waterproof, weighs 3-4 lbs, and is entirely portable. It has a 16GB SD card for its operating system and a 16GB flash drive for additional storage. The system can boot into Raspbian with WiFi connectivity. However, it cannot be powered externally while in use. Battery life lasts approximately 7 hours when connected to an external HDMI TV and the internal screen is turned off, but drops to about 3 hours when using the internal screen. The author shares as many parts as possible, including the Raspberry Pi Model B, a screen, WiFi, a wireless keyboard, panel-mount Ethernet, panel-mount HDMI, panel-mount USB, an SNES USB controller, lipo batteries, and a Pelican 1200 case. The creator encourages others to recreate the project and make it their own, providing blank pieces for modification.
