CG Cookie's Retopology Exercise is a step-by-step guide to master retopology skills. This tutorial assumes prior knowledge of Maya and some understanding of 3D modeling principles. The exercise involves creating a detailed, high-poly model from a low-resolution mesh. The goal is to achieve a smooth, accurate surface with minimal distortion or stretching. To begin, import the provided low-poly model into Maya and name it "low_poly." Next, create a new poly object by going to Create > Poly Primitives > Plane. Name this new object "high_poly." Subdivide the high-poly mesh several times until it reaches the desired level of detail. Use the Subdivide tool in Maya's modeling toolbar to achieve this. Once subdivided, use the Relax tool to smooth out any irregularities in the surface. Select all faces and apply the Relax command from the Mesh Utilities menu. Now, switch back to object mode by pressing Ctrl + Tab. This will allow you to work on the high-poly model's vertices. Use the Move tool to adjust the position of individual vertices or groups of vertices to achieve a more accurate representation of the original low-poly mesh. Pay close attention to areas where the high-poly mesh meets the low-poly mesh, as these areas tend to be prone to distortion. Continue refining the high-poly model until it matches the detail and accuracy of the original low-poly mesh. Use the Select tool to choose individual vertices or groups of vertices and move them into place. As you work, use the Move tool to fine-tune the position of each vertex. Once satisfied with the high-poly model's accuracy and detail, name it "final_high_poly." Save this new object as a separate file for future reference. Finally, export both the low-poly and final high-poly models from Maya and compare their differences in a 3D viewer or rendering engine. This exercise should provide valuable insight into the retopology process and help you develop your skills as a 3D artist.
