Retable (Shelf) Fragment, Melrose Abbey

sketchfab

This intricate fragment of panel art, adorned with meticulously carved figures, is likely to have been part of a retable - a frame or shelf positioned behind an altar where sacred objects like crucifixes and candlesticks were respectfully displayed. It vividly depicts St Jerome, one of the most revered fathers of the Christian church, and dates back to the mid-15th century. The panel would have once encased cherished objects above an altar in Melrose Abbey, a site of great spiritual significance. A damaged area near the foot likely originally featured a symbol to identify the saint. For more information on visiting Melrose Abbey, please visit our website. Dimensions: 511 x 568 x 178mm.
