They should be only 1-2 walls thick; cut them with a hobby knife if they are stubborn. How I Designed This: When considering future possibilities of building a paste printer, it became clear that other paste extruders didn't quite fit my needs. Easy-to-clean direct-drive syringe-based designs capable of thicker material and retraction were in demand. The only options found were either too weak, unable to retract, or Bowden-style. To address these limitations, I came up with some ideas but soon saw their flaws. Then, a breakthrough occurred by thinking about doing the opposite of a lead screw: turning the nut to move the screw. This led to printing a new plunger with built-in threads and mating it to a printed gear. Further investigation revealed that an M8 rod was available. A crucial realization followed: some way to transfer the motion of a stepper to the nut on the thread was needed. A worm gear would put it in the best possible position, and a hyperbolic gear now used in the design came to mind shortly after.
